February 2014 – to date / Freelance Official Translator and Interpreter – TecPlus Translations

Since I was appointed an official (certified) translator and interpreter by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Costa Rica, I have been working from home as a freelance translator for the southern part of Costa Rica. Being located in Pérez Zeledón, I provide services for neighboring law firms, accountant firms, courts, and the general public. Mostly, documents to be translated consist but are not limited to, birth certificates, adoption documents, attorney certifications and legal forms. Serving as a Court Interpreter appointed by the Judiciary of the Republic of Costa Rica, I have been able to assist in trials where one of the parties communicates in English. Legal jargon is complex by nature; thus, enhanced linguistic skills are necessary in order to convey and communicate the exact meaning of a certain word, and to give it meaning in its embedded context. It is, indeed, a highly complicated work, but equally satisfying. This is true in my case because I have always been drawn to legal subjects. My clients, namely judges, parties involved and others, that I assist while I serve as a Court Interpreter have shown themselves really pleased with my work. Our company is called TecPlus Translations and offers translation, interpretation and linguistic services, mostly in the southern part of our country, but is not limited by geography. When the client can afford delivery charges, we simply send the documents anywhere in the country. And if on-site interpretation is needed, travel expenses can be negotiated and service can be provided in a responsible, professional and courteous manner.

 

February - October, 2007 - Interpreter / Language Line Services (Call Center) Heredia

I worked as a Spanish interpreter over the phone for customer service. This company provides interpretation services for financial, insurance, health care, governmental, communication, utilities, manufacturing, transportation and other industries. Specifically, I interpreted conversations between service provider (communicating in the target language: English), and users of such service (communicating in Spanish) over the phone. 2005 - 2006 – Assistant / University of Costa Rica (UCR)School of Philology, Linguistics and Literature I worked with Mario Portilla, Ph. D, in a trilingual dictionary: Creole English or Mekatelyu spoken in Limón to Spanish and English. I specifically worked in typing terms in Creole English and Spanish and then translated entries to English. I also added respective examples in Creole English and translated them to Spanish and English.
